What Does it Mean to be a “Bad Indian”?
If you come from a close-knit culture, unique traits, and choices are looked down upon if they differ from the group norms. You might secretly hide parts of your life out of fear of being judged or ostracized. You may even resent and internalize negative beliefs about your culture.
I’ve been and done all those things! For so long, I was told that I was a “Bad Indian Girl” because I made choices that felt good to me but went against the unwritten rules of the culture. I did the opposite of what a “Good Indian Girl” does. I felt alone in my experience, and I struggled with anxiety and depression because of it.
I gave myself the validation that I’m exactly where I need to be. Little did I know that other people who come from community-oriented spaces were also struggling. I’m a “Bad” Indian Therapist because I am my authentic self, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re Indian or not—I’m here to help you become your most authentic self too!
I work with South Asian American clients, but I also help people from all walks of life who have trouble with guilt-driven anxiety and behaviors. I grew up Indian and Catholic—IMAGINE how much guilt was instilled in my upbringing! If you struggle with guilt and shame, you can still belong to yourself, honor and appreciate your background, and strengthen your support system while setting healthy limits. So, how do we start? By being “BAD” together! Schedule your FREE 20-minute consultation call to see if I’m a good fit for you.
